As part of our reality modeling services, we undertook the project of 3d scanning of the stern of a luxury yacht to inspect deformations following a collision with another vessel.
For the needs of the yacht’s 3D documentation, the FARO FOCUS M70 3D laser scanner was utilized, performing a total of 15 distinct scans on the external areas of the yacht’s stern. To spatially align the scans and create a unified 3D model, spherical targets were affixed to the yacht’s structure in a configuration that ensured their visibility from multiple scanning positions. The process of solving and anchoring the individual scans into a unified model revealed a sub-centimeter 3d error.
The deformation inspection focused on the roof of the yacht’s exterior lounge at the point of collision, both as a single surface and on distinct load-bearing metal beams.
The results were presented with perspective visualizations of the 3D point cloud, featuring color-coded deformation gradients measured from a horizontal reference plane, as well as sectional drawings of key beams on the roof.
The inspection highlighted the roof sections that experienced deformations, with maximum values reaching approximately 22 cm. The corresponding metal beams exhibited deformations of approximately 10 cm.
