On February 2021, and in the context of a research programm in collaboration with University of Patras and UC Berkeley, a UAV mapping field expedition took place in a landfill, 14 months after the previous one.
During this mission, in complementing the standard aerial photogrammetric mapping with an optical camera, for subsidense monitoring and volume calculation of new deposits, we have mapped the landfill area with thermal camera mounted on UAV.
This approach is implemented in landfills for finding thermal “hotspots”, classifying soil materials, detecting methane leaks, and identifying ground cracks.
In the following slider, the thermal view of the landfill, alternating with the corresponding RGB view, is presented .
